Moroccan Zanafi and Ait Ouarda Berber Marriage Kilim
$1,350.00
This rare marriage kilim is an exquisite work of art. The stunning, seamless blend of two very different weaving styles is unlike others we have seen in our Moroccan travels. This beautifully crafted work of art will not come our way again.
The bold, graphic style of the black and ivory pattern is a signature design of the Berber Zanafi tribe. The distinctive “lozenge” motifs are enhanced by the restrained use of color resembling an appliqué effect. They are embellished with two patches of colorful latticework designs.
The more colorful portion of this vintage hanbel (kilim) was created by a weaver of the Ait Ouarda tribe. The women are praised for their skillful combinations of glorious colors, textures and motifs. The hardy sheep indigenous to this mountainous area and its harsh environment supply the wool. Natural dyes are made from local roots, flowers and berries. The varied patterns and symbols echo the natural world — wind, rivers, desert dunes and fertility.
